Sustainable Cotton: The Power of Responsible Choices

On average, people in the Netherlands buy 50 clothing items per year.* Cotton is one of the most widely used fibers in the world, but traditional cotton farming comes with significant environmental challenges. These include excessive water usage, pesticides, and soil depletion. However, as the demand for sustainable fashion grows, so does the need for more sustainable cotton alternatives.

The Challenge

Traditional cotton farming consumes a tremendous amount of water and chemical pesticides. For example, it takes an average of 2,700 liters of water to produce just one cotton T-shirt. Additionally, intensive farming practices deplete the soil, leading to reduced biodiversity. As a consumer, it can be difficult to navigate through all the claims and determine what is truly sustainable. Moreover, the quality of clothing and our behavior as consumers also pose challenges. On average, a piece of clothing is only worn 7 times before it is discarded.** This fast fashion trend has led to the creation of massive clothing waste dumps in places like Chile, which are so large they can be seen from space.

The Solution: What Can You Do?

You can make a difference by consciously choosing products made from organic cotton or recycled materials. Look for certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), which ensure that cotton is produced in an environmentally friendly and socially responsible way. It’s also a good idea to wear your clothes for longer and buy second-hand. Investing in higher-quality clothing, which might be more expensive but lasts longer, can also help reduce waste.

Alternatives

In addition to organic cotton, there are other sustainable fibers like hemp, linen, or Tencel, which use less water and chemicals. By making responsible choices, you can contribute to a more sustainable future in fashion.
